Pro-Pain 🇺🇸

Pro-Pain is a quintessential New York hardcore/metal crossover band formed in 1991. Known for their blue-collar work ethic and “no-nonsense” attitude, they are one of the most prolific bands in the scene, having released 15 studio albums (with a 16th scheduled for late 2026). The band is led by founding member Gary Meskil, who remains the group’s sole constant figure and driving force.

Band Overview

  • Origin: New York City, USA
  • Formed: 1991 (by Gary Meskil and Dan Richardson after leaving Crumbsuckers)
  • Genre: Hardcore / Groove Metal / Thrash Metal
  • Key Figure: Gary Meskil (Vocals/Bass)
  • Label: Steamhammer / Nuclear Blast (historically)

History & The “Foul Taste” Legacy

  • The Breakthrough (1992): Their debut album, Foul Taste of Freedom, was an immediate success, blending the aggression of New York hardcore with heavy thrash riffs. It remains a definitive classic of the 90s crossover genre.
  • Consistency & Change: Throughout the 90s and 2000s, the band released an album almost every one to two years. While many hardcore bands faded away, Pro-Pain stayed active by building a massive, loyal following in Europe, particularly in Germany and the Benelux countries.
  • The 2017 Incident: While on tour in Brussels, Belgium, Gary Meskil was the victim of a brutal robbery and attempted murder. Despite suffering severe injuries, he made a remarkable recovery and returned to the stage, solidifying his reputation as one of the “toughest men in metal.”

2026: The New Era

Pro-Pain is currently celebrating their 35th year as a band with high-profile festival slots and new music.

Upcoming Album: Untitled (Album #16)

  • Release Date: Scheduled for late 2026.
  • Details: This will be their first full-length studio album since 2015’s Voice of Rebellion. Gary Meskil has noted that the long gap was due to his recovery from the 2017 attack and a subsequent hand surgery that temporarily prevented him from writing on guitar.

2026 Tour Dates

The band has a heavy European schedule planned for the summer of 2026:

  • May 13: Turock, Essen (DE)
  • May 14: Bastard Club, Osnabrück (DE)
  • June: Obscene Extreme Festival (CZ) — Their first-ever appearance at this legendary grindcore/hardcore fest.
  • August 7–9: Alcatraz Open Air (BE)
  • August 21: Heartcore Island Open Air, Schmelz (DE)

Current Lineup (2026)

  • Gary Meskil: Vocals, Bass
  • Greg Discenza: Lead Guitar (Joined 2019)
  • Eric Klinger: Rhythm Guitar
  • Jonas Sanders: Drums (Member since 2012)

Note on Næstved: Pro-Pain is a staple of the Danish club circuit, often playing venues like Pumpehuset or BETA. While they haven’t been announced for Næstved Metalfest 2026 yet, their August tour dates in nearby Germany and Belgium make them a strong candidate for a late-summer Danish club show or festival addition.
