Hailing from Örebro, Sweden, Carnosus is one of the most exciting names in the modern extreme metal scene. They have evolved from a “scrappy” school-mate project into a technical death metal powerhouse signed to the prestigious Willowtip Records.
The Journey: 2011 to Present
- The Early Years (2011–2016): Formed by three school friends (Gotting, Hedner, and Persson), the band spent their early years honing a “Deathrash” sound. They released their first demo in 2015 and followed it with the EP The Universal Culmination (2016), recorded with the legendary Tomas Skogsberg (the producer behind the classic Sunlight Studio sound of Entombed and Dismember).
- The Breakthrough (2020): After a series of singles and high-profile support slots for bands like Pestilence and Cannibal Corpse, they released their debut full-length, Dogma of the Deceased. It was here they began shedding their thrash roots for a more complex, technical approach.
- Independent Ascent (2023): Their sophomore album, Visions of Infinihility, was a massive leap forward. Despite being an independent release, it gained “viral” traction in tech-death circles for its insane musicianship and “caveman-meets-genius” drumming.
- Current Era (2024–2026): Now signed to Willowtip Records, they released Wormtales in late 2024. As of 2025/2026, they have transitioned into a global touring act, headlining tours in Canada and appearing at major European festivals like Gothenburg Extreme Sounds.
Genre & Sound: “Technical Melodic Death Metal”
Carnosus is difficult to pin down to a single tag, as they blend several extreme styles:
- The Core: Primarily Technical Death Metal, but they avoid the “soulless” robotic feel of some tech-death by keeping a strong Melodic Death Metal foundation (reminiscent of Slaughter of the Soul-era At The Gates).
- The Twist: Fans often compare them to The Black Dahlia Murder or Revocation because of their high-energy “spider-riffs” and thrashy momentum.
- Vocals: Frontman Jonatan Karasiak is widely praised for his versatility, jumping between deep gutturals, high-pitched shrieks, and an almost “dry, snarling” delivery that makes the lyrics surprisingly intelligible.
- “The Caveman Factor”: The band often jokes about their own complexity (callinndex.php/2025/06/02/carnosus/g their drum patterns “confused unga bunga”), balancing high-brow technicality with raw, lizard-brain aggression.
Current Lineup
- Jonatan Karasiak: Vocals
- Rickard Persson: Lead Guitar
- Marcus Jokela Nyström: Rhythm Guitar
- Marcus Strindlund: Bass (utilizes a 7-string bass for massive low-end)
- Jacob Hedner: Drums
