Sound of the Damned 🇬🇱

Sound of the Damned (often abbreviated as SOTD) is a pioneering force in the small but fierce Greenlandic metal scene. Hailing from Nuuk, the world’s northernmost capital, the band has gained international recognition for being one of the few acts to blend high-intensity modern metal with lyrics performed in the native Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) language.

Band Overview

  • Origin: Nuuk, Greenland
  • Formed: 2017
  • Genre: Death Metal / Metalcore
  • Status: Active
  • Lyrical Themes: Mental health, trauma, resilience, and Greenlandic identity.

History & Cultural Impact

Sound of the Damned emerged in 2017 as part of a new generation of Greenlandic youth reclaiming their cultural heritage. While Greenland has a long history of rock and punk (like the legendary Sumé), SOTD pushed the boundaries into extreme metal.

The band is unique for its collaborative structure; while the four instrumentalists handle the crushing “Deathcore-adjacent” music, their lyrics are primarily written by Pani Enequist. Her deeply personal and honest words explore the dark realities of life in the Arctic, often dealing with societal pressures and inner demons, which front-singer Sebastian Enequist delivers with a raw, visceral intensity.

Featured Album: Atornerlunnanga

Released in 2023, Atornerlunnanga (roughly translated as “Don’t Abuse Me”) is the band’s debut full-length album. It was a major milestone for Arctic music.

Key Album Facts:

  • Recording: The band traveled to the Faroe Islands to record at Studio Bloch in Tórshavn. The album was produced by Theodor Kapnas (guitarist of the doom metal band Hamferð), giving it a massive, professional Scandinavian sound.
  • Recognition: The album earned the band a nomination at the Koda Awards, the most prestigious music awards in Greenland.
  • Key Tracks:
    1. Atornerlunnanga: The title track, featuring a mix of atmospheric build-up and crushing breakdowns.
    2. Inuk Uummarit: A fan-favorite that showcases their blend of melodic guitar work and death metal growls.
    3. Shadow: A track that explores the “monster” within, moving between English and Greenlandic lyrics.

Current Lineup (2026)

  • Sebastian Enequist: Vocals, Guitar
  • Josva Møller: Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals
  • Hermann Josefsen: Bass (Joined 2018)
  • Tuka Allarneq Nielsen Lyberth: Drums

2026 Activity

Sound of the Damned remains a staple of the Nuuk Nordic Culture Festival and Arctic Sounds. In early 2026, they have continued to be featured in global metal discussions (including SiriusXM’s Roots series) as a prime example of the “Indigenous Arctic” metal movement.

Fun Fact: The band is part of a growing movement of Greenlandic artists who choose to speak English or Greenlandic over Danish as a symbol of cultural independence and “freedom from colonization.”
