While often associated with the Benelux region, Channel Zero is actually the most successful heavy metal band in Belgium’s history. Formed in Brussels in 1990, they are often referred to as “The Belgian Metallica” due to their massive cultural impact and high-energy live shows.

Band Overview
- Origin: Brussels, Belgium
- Formed: 1990
- Genre: Groove Metal / Thrash Metal
- Status: Farewell Phase (2026)
- Key Figures: Franky De Smet-Van Damme (Vocals) and Tino DeMartino (Bass).
History: The “Belgian Metallica”
- The Breakthrough (1994): Their third album, Unsafe, was a global breakthrough, featuring guest vocals from Billy Milano (S.O.D.) and Richard 23 (Front 242). It mixed aggressive thrash with the rising groove metal sound of the early 90s.
- Peak Success (1997): Their album Black Fuel remains a masterpiece of the genre, produced by Attie Bauw (who worked with Rob Halford). Despite being at the height of their career, the band disbanded shortly after its release.
- The Resurrection (2010): The band returned for six sold-out shows at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels—the first three sold out in just 49 minutes. This reunion led to a permanent return to the scene and high-profile slots at festivals like Graspop and Rock Werchter.
- Tragedy (2013): Founding drummer Phil Baheux tragically passed away at age 45 just before a festival performance. The band eventually decided to continue in his honor, recruiting Mikey Doling (ex-Soulfly/Snot) and Seven Antonopoulos to solidify the lineup.
The Grand Finale: 2026 Farewell Tour
As of February 2026, Channel Zero is currently in the middle of their official farewell cycle. After 36 years, the “Belgian Metal Pride” has decided to go out at their peak.
Final 2026 Show Dates:
- December 5, 2026: Lotto Arena, Antwerp (BE)
- December 10, 11, & 12, 2026: Ancienne Belgique (AB), Brussels (BE) — This is the venue where they made history, and these will be their final “Going out with a Bang” performances.

Note on Næstved: Channel Zero has deep ties to the European festival circuit. While they are focusing on their massive Belgian arena shows for the finale in December 2026, they are expected to make a round of “Final Festival” appearances during the summer of 2026.
Will they play Næstved Metalfest 2026?
While Channel Zero is not yet officially confirmed for Næstved Metalfest 2026 (August 27–29), they are a prime candidate for one of the 10 remaining slots.
- The Connection: The band is already confirmed for Alcatraz Open Air in Belgium just three weeks before Næstved. Since they are doing a “Farewell Festival Run” during the summer of 2026, a final stop in Denmark is highly plausible.
- The Lineup: NMF 2026 already features many of their contemporaries like Mnemic, Illdisposed, and Bloodbath, making Channel Zero a perfect thematic fit for the “Groove/Thrash” legendary status of the event.
