The band was founded by Kodzo “Rock” Ahavi, who grew up believing he was the only metal fan in Togo. After moving to Lomé, he found like-minded musicians and his brother, Enrico, to form the current quintet.
The term Asrafocore is derived from the Ewe word Asrafo (Warrior) and Kor (Fist/Headquarters, or simply “core”). Their music is a reclamation of metal’s primal energy, which Rock Ahavi believes is intrinsically linked to ancestral African war chants and rhythms. They use traditional instruments like the gankogui (cowbell), axatse (shaker), and djembe alongside seven-string guitars and double-bass drumming.
