The Danish metal scene in 2026 is reaching a fever pitch, with some of the country’s biggest legends returning to the fold alongside the “new guard” of extreme metal.
Here is a breakdown of the most anticipated and confirmed Danish metal releases for 2026.
The Heavy Hitters (Legends & Mainstream)
- Volbeat – God of Angels Trust (Touring Focus): While released in June 2025, the band will spend most of 2026 on their “Greatest of All Tours Worldwide.” Expect live albums or deluxe tour editions of this record throughout the year as they headline major festivals like Copenhell.
- Mercyful Fate – Title TBA: This is the “Holy Grail” for 2026. After being in the “demoing process” throughout 2025, rumors and industry lists suggest that King Diamond and company are finally ready to unleash their first new studio album since 1999.
- King Diamond – The Institute: Similarly, King Diamond’s long-delayed solo concept album is slated to finally arrive in 2026, possibly accompanied by a massive theatrical world tour.
Extreme & Modern Metal (The Core Scene)
- Afsky – Fællesskab (January 30, 2026): One of the most important Black Metal releases of the year. Ole Luk’s project continues its rise with this new full-length, preceded by the haunting single “Ouverturen til undergangen.”
- Cabal – Everything Rots (Late 2025 / Early 2026 Touring): Released just before the turn of the year, the band will be “re-releasing” their dominance through 2026 with a massive touring cycle. Their blend of brutal deathcore is currently the standard for the modern Danish scene.
- Baest – Colossal (Touring Focus): After their August 2025 release, 2026 will be the year Baest takes Colossal to the global stage. Expect potential live EPs or “B-side” releases as they support Arch Enemy and headline European summer festivals.
- Vanir – Rust In Peace (April 4, 2026): The Viking/Folk metal veterans have a release concert scheduled for early April at Rust, Copenhagen. This album is expected to lean into their heavier, more aggressive side.
Experimental & Specialized Releases
- Myrkur – “Touch My Love And Die”: In a surprising move, Amalie Bruun has entered Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2026 (Eurovision qualifier) with this dark, cinematic ballad. Whether it leads to a full album in 2026 remains to be seen, but the single marks a significant new chapter.
- Defacing God / Maceration / Shadowspawn: These three pillars of Danish Death Metal are embarking on the Metalized Tour 2026 in April. It is highly likely all three will have new EPs or “Tour Editions” of their latest work to coincide with these dates.
