Testament is a legendary pillar of the San Francisco Bay Area thrash metal scene. Formed in 1983 (originally as Legacy), they are widely considered one of the most successful and influential thrash bands to emerge in the 80s, often cited alongside the “Big Four” as the next in line for the throne.

The band’s early days featured Steve “Zetro” Souza (later of Exodus) on vocals, but it was Chuck Billy who led them to fame on their debut, The Legacy (1987).

- The Death Metal Influence (1994–1999): During the 90s, when many thrash bands faltered, Testament got heavier. Albums like Low and The Gathering introduced death metal growls and more extreme rhythmic patterns.
- The 2020s Renaissance: They have enjoyed a massive resurgence with a series of critically acclaimed albums, maintaining a level of speed and aggression that puts younger bands to shame.
Recent Milestone: Para Bellum (2025)
Released on October 10, 2025, Para Bellum (“Prepare for War”) is the band’s 14th studio album and has been hailed as one of the best releases of the decade so far.
- New Blood: It is the first album to feature the incredible drumming of Chris Dovas, who joined after the departures of Gene Hoglan and Dave Lombardo.
- Sound: The album leans into Eric Peterson’s love for black metal atmosphere while keeping the high-velocity thrash and Alex Skolnick’s melodic solos front and center.

Note on Næstved: While Testament is not yet on the 2026 Næstved Metalfest list, their heavy festival schedule in Europe this summer (August 2026) puts them in the region during the NMF dates.
