Svartsot 🇩🇰

Svartsot (Archaic Danish for “Black Sickness”) is the definitive leader of the Danish folk metal scene. Formed in Randers in 2005, they are famous for blending melodic death metal with authentic medieval instruments like bagpipes, mandolins, and tin whistles. Unlike many folk metal bands that use synths, Svartsot is dedicated to a more “organic” and gritty sound, with lyrics sung exclusively in Danish.

Band Overview

  • Origin: Randers, Denmark
  • Formed: 2005
  • Genre: Folk Metal / Melodic Death Metal
  • Label: Mighty Music (current) / Napalm Records (historical)
  • Core Figure: Cris J.S. Frederiksen (Guitarist/Composer/Founder)

History & Evolution

Svartsot emerged as the first major Danish band to successfully fuse the “Gothenburg” death metal sound with Nordic folk traditions. Their 2007 debut, Ravnenes Saga, put them on the international map, leading to tours with genre giants like Týr and Alestorm.

Despite several lineup changes over the years, the band has remained prolific. They are noted for their historical accuracy and use of actual folk melodies rather than just “drinking song” tropes. After a seven-year studio hiatus following 2015’s Vældet, they returned with a renewed focus on their roots.

Key Release: Kumbl

Released on February 25, 2022, Kumbl (an Old Danish word meaning “monument” or “memorial”) is the band’s fifth studio album and their first under the Danish label Mighty Music.

Album Concept:

  • A Tribute to the Past: Unlike their previous albums, which featured original compositions, Kumbl is a “covers” album of sorts. It consists of 12 traditional folk and late-medieval songs from Denmark and Northern Europe, reworked into Svartsot’s heavy style.
  • Production: The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by the band’s drummer at the time, Frederik Uglebjerg.
  • Key Tracks:
    1. Liden Kirsten: A tragic ballad about a king and his mistress.
    2. Drømte Mig En Drøm: Based on the oldest known secular song in Denmark, found in a runic manuscript from 1300.
    3. Carmen Vernale: A 16th-century Latin song praising spring, written by a cantor at Aarhus Cathedral.
    4. Ramund: A high-energy take on the legendary Danish hero Ramund the Young.

Current Status & 2026 Activity

Svartsot is currently in a very active “anniversary” phase.

  • 20th Anniversary (2025–2026): The band is celebrating 20 years of existence.
  • New Album: Peregrinus (2025): They followed up Kumbl with a brand-new concept album titled Peregrinus, released in late 2025. It tells the story of an orphaned crusader in the Holy Lands.
  • Upcoming Live Show: Svartsot is scheduled to perform at Viften, Rødovre on Friday, January 23, 2026 (note: this date has just passed, but they are expected to continue touring throughout the year).
  • Lineup Update: Following the departure of Frederik Uglebjerg, the band is now joined by new permanent drummer Rune Frisch.

  • Hans-Jørgen Martinus Vork Rosenwein: Bagpipes, Tin Whistle, Mandolin

Yes, Svartsot has a strong history with Næstved Metalfest.

Past Performances

  • Næstved Metalfest 2024: Svartsot performed a highly acclaimed set on Saturday, August 31, 2024. They were one of the major Danish highlights of the year, sharing the stage with international acts like Asinhell (featuring Michael Poulsen), Necrophobic, and Tygers of Pan Tang. Critics noted that their mix of heavy death metal and authentic folk instruments made them the “perfect party band” for the festival’s atmosphere.

Current Status for 2026

As of late January 2026, Svartsot is not yet listed in the preliminary lineup for Næstved Metalfest 2026.

The current 2026 lineup (August 27–29) already features 22 out of 32 bands, including:

  • The Gathering (NL)
  • Bloodbath (SE)
  • Marduk (SE)
  • Týr (FO) — Note: Since Týr (Faroese folk metal) is confirmed, Svartsot would be a very thematic fit for the remaining slots.
  • Mnemic (DK)
  • Illdisposed (DK)
  • Heathen (US)

Because the festival typically announces bands in “waves,” there are still 10 slots left to be filled. Given Svartsot’s popularity in Denmark and their recent activity with the Peregrinus album (2025), they are a frequent fan-request for the remaining Danish spots.
